Editing Hosts file in Windows
Note: This method works for Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista
The path to the Hosts file in Windows 8,Windows 7, Vista is the same as usual:
%systemroot%system32driversetc
where %systemroot% is usually c:windows unless you installed Windows on a different partition.
Note: If you try editing the hosts file here by right clicking on it and opening it with notepad, it would open but it would not save your edited version. It would either say that you don’t have the required permission to edit or that the file is already in use hence cant be edited.
In order to Edit the hosts file:
1.) Go to Start. Type notepad. Right click on notepad and click on Run as Administrator.
2.) Now notepad will open with alleviated permissions. Now simply go to File—>Open and now navigate again to c:windowssystem32driversetc and open the hosts file, edit it and you will be able to save it successfully.
Just make sure to select ‘all files’ when opening through notepad else you wont see it.
